The Friday talks and conversation will focus on the opportunities and challanges of learning new skills and some ways in which we can all help each other grow skills together. We'll learn from some engaging speakers about the realities and challenges of learning new technical skills in addition to disciplinary academic knowledge and learning. With more and more expected of the 21st century researcher, how will you be prepared? Come join the conversation!

Workshop Streams - Research projects and communication

This will cover techniques and tools for effectively managing research projects, and their associated data (and metadata). While "project management" is oftne associated with large scale initiatives, smaller research projects (e.g. Masters and PhD theses!) can benefit hugely from access to the right tools and knowledge of best practice. https://github.com/Shiobhan/21CAsss/blob/master/21cass.md this workshop will introduce you to:
  • How to use persistent identifiers, including ORCIDs and DOIs to improve the visibility and citability of both you and your research
  • How to identify physical research objects in an online world
  • How to license your work using the Creative Commons framework
  • How to apply the 'think, check, submit' framework when publishing your research
  • What to do (and what not to do) with your personal (and institutional) website
  • How to get credit for your peer review activities
  • How to pitch your research to journalists

Workshop streams - Non-programming digital skills and tools

This workshop will be an introduction to OpenRefine with a humanities data focus.
It will cover:
  • What is OpenRefine
  • Loading data into OpenRefine
  • Data cleaning
  • Sorting, filtering, and summarising data
Please install OpenRefine before you come to the workshop.
This session wil be an introduction to the creation of a digital lab notebook. It will be based on https://github.com/JoshuaHarris391/OSG_Eletronic_lab_Book_JH/blob/master/Guidelines.md
It will cover:
  • Creating up a github account
  • Creating a repository to store the notebook
  • Introduction to markdown syntax for formatting
  • Adding entries to the notebook
  • Modifying existing entries
  • Collaborating
